Help the orangutans!

Two more countries are now also in possession of illegally imported orangutans from Indonesia; Cambodia and Malaysia.  These captive orangutans are being cruelly exploited in “kickboxing” animal shows, to make money.  They are humiliated and their welfare is ignored.  Please take action to free these orangutans.

A Cambodian safari park illegally imported 36 orangutans from Thailand in early 2005.  Malaysia zoo or animal keeps 7 of Indonesian illegally imported orangutans.  The orangutans are forced to performed in clown-like, inhumane attraction and degrading tricks for money.

Cambodia and Malaysia are both members of CITES (Convention of International Trade in Endangered Species) and yet the government of Cambodia and Malaysia did not take action to stop such illegal import.

How can you help the situation in Cambodia?

Please email the Secretary General of CITES, Mr. Willem Wijnstekers, and ask him what is he doing about these orangutans in Cambodia and will he bring sanctions against Cambodia? With this and any other letter you write to do with this campaign, please be polite.

Mr. Willem Wijnstekers e-mail address is: cites@unep.ch

Prime Minister of Cambodia Samdech Hun Sen: please could you write and ask him politely if he could personally arrange for the 36 illegal orangutans held at Koh Kong Safari World, to be returned without further delay to their country of origin?

His e-mail address is: cabinet1a@hotmail.com and copy your e-mail to this address: cabinet@norodomsihanouk.info

An e-mail to Ambassador Hor Nambora at the Royal Embassy of Cambodia in London asking him the same question as above would also be a great help to the campaign.

His e-mail address is: cambodianembassy@btconnect.com

How can you help the situation in Malaysia?

CITES - Please can you write to the Secretary General, Mr. Willem Wijnstekers, and ask him why the CITES office in Malaysia refuses to make public the DNA report on the orangutans? Also, when will this same office return to Indonesia seven orangutans that its own CITES official in Malaysia has said belong back in that country?

The e-mail address of Mr. Willem Wijnstekers is: cites@unep.ch

Could you also write to the Minister of the Environment: Datuk Azmi Khalid and ask him to investigate why this orangutan DNA report is being kept secret? Please could you also ask him when will he return the seven orangutans currently being made to perform clown-like, inhumane and degrading tricks in Malaysian zoos, back to Indonesia?

The e-mail address of Datuk Seri Azmi Khalid is: azmi.khalid@nre.gov.my

Please copy your e-mail to info@parliament.gov.my

and mycounsellor@btconnect.com

Malaysian Tourist Board Director (UK), Mr. Razip Hasan, is someone who needs to know how unacceptable these cruel and degrading orangutan shows are, and how badly they reflect on Malaysia to you as a potential visitor.

The e-mail address of Mr. Razip Hasan is: info@tourism-malaysia.co.uk

At all times, please be polite in your E-mails to these people.
