REPORT ON ACEH RESCUE OPERATION -
08 FEB 2005
SUCCESSFUL
EVACUATION OF TRAPPED WILDLIFE IN WULANDARI MINI ZOO, ACEH
ProFauna Indonesia despatched their rescue team on 7th Feb 2005 to
Aceh to evacuate all of the nine wild animals trapped in a damaged Wulandari
private mini zoo. This was done with the involvement of the staff from BKSDA
of Indonesian Forestry Department.

Animals in Wulandari private mini zoo
before evacuation
Prior to the evacuation, the animals were without care and are in a very poor
condition following the tsunami tragedy. Some suffer from diarrhoea. The
evacuated animals are; 1 macaque, 1 stork, 4 tortoises, 1 iguana and 2
pythons.
These
wild animals are now temporarily sheltered at the Veterinary Science Faculty
of Syah Kuala University, Aceh. The move was welcomed by the university, as
they are involved in the animal evacuation program in Aceh. In the meantime,
the undergraduates help with feeding and caring. Our next plan is to move
them to Medan, when their health and condition have improved to endure the
long land journey.

Animals evacuation
process in Wulandari Zoo
At present, ProFauna’s team is in the process of field data gathering on the
domestic livestock in Aceh and requires volunteers, which was immediately
filled by the students from the above university. The management and handling
of these animal tsunami victims are being coordinated by both ProFauna
Indonesia and Yayasan Yudhistira Bali.
