Progress report on saving animals in Aceh
PROFAUNA
RETURNS TO ACEH TO BRING VETERINARY SUPPLIES AND TO EVACUATE ANIMALS
Animals which survived the tsunami
tragedy in Aceh are without care and suffering from hunger and weakness,
which make them susceptible to contract salmonella infection, diarrhea,
rabies, leptospirosis, skin infections, etc. These diseases are
transmittable to human. “Our concern is that following the tsunami
tragedy, human survivors could be hit by a second tragedy, which is
diseases from animals” said Drh (DVM) Luki Kusuma Wardhani, the Aceh
team coordinator of ProFauna.

ProFauna team was preparing
medical equipment to be brought to Aceh
Because of this
ProFauna is sending a team to Aceh to evacuate animals and to give
veterinary treatment. The team of six was dispatched on 3rd
Feb 2005 from Malang, East Java and consists of; Drh (Dvm) Luki Kusuma
Wardhani, Susan, Suparno, Edy Slamet, Seto H. Wibowo and Tri Prayudhi.
The team departs from ProFauna’s Indonesia headquarters on its“Freedom
Fighter” bus heading to Surabaya city. From here the team will fly to
Medan city, Sumatra, on 4th February. They
will proceed from Medan to Aceh by road, where they will be assisted by
tens of ProFauna members from both Medan and Aceh.
ProFauna’s
missions in Aceh are:
- To evacuate
surviving wildlife trapped in the damaged Wulandari mini zoo to a
temporary animal quarantine centre at Sumatera Orangutan Conservation
Program (SOCP) in Medan
-
To provide veterinary treatment and food
and water to domestic animals in Banda Aceh city.

This animal welfare mission in Aceh is led by ProFauna and supported by
other organizations including Indonesian Zoo Watch (IZW) and Sumatera
Orangutan Conservation Program (SOCP). The emergency efforts to save
these tsunami animal victims have received support and donations from
international organization including World Society for the
Protection of Animal (WSPA), International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW),
Humane Society International (HSI) and Royal Society for the Prevention
of Cruelty to Animal (RSPCA).
Our next plan after
giving the medical treatment and food to domestic animals is to
vaccinate them. This can only be done when their health has improved and
they are fit enough to be immunized.
