The truth about the apes & primates
trade:
Primates come second after parrots as the
most hunted species. Although there are
more than 35 species of primates, only a
few are recognized by the public. Despite
being listed as critically endangered by
CITES and the prediction that only a few
will survive in the wild in the next
millennium, the hunting and smuggling of
orangutans goes on unabated.

Smuggled infant orangutan found dead
Infant orangutans command large cash
prices but for every baby or juvenile
orangutan sold in the market, at least
one adult dies. International criminal
syndicates are behind the hunting and
smuggling. We found nearly 150 orangutans
were smuggled and bought by “Safari World”
of Phuket for entertainment money
spinners, trained as “Boxers”. These
orangutans have been cruelly confined in
crammed cages and trained to “box” for the
entertainment of humans. Some died and
some were re-exported. We have since
launched strong protests and an on-going
campaign since last year to demand their
return to their natural habitats. Sadly,
no orangutan has been returned to date.
This can only be resolved by the Thai
government’s intervention. Please take a
moment to support this petition.

Primates and apes such as the ebony langur
(Trachypithecus auratus), macaque, leaf
monkey, gibbons, siamang and owa (the
Hylobates group) are also hunted and sold
for pets and and for bushmeat. Certain
practice believes that the consumption of
certain animal parts is medicinal and can
bestow power. We have documented the
torching of live primates for “food” and
have launched a public campaign to stop
it. Following our pressure, the local
authority in Lampung (Sumatra) issued new
legislation to stop this practice and the
closure of the restaurants involved. |
