What we do:
Our
ongoing programs cover the following:
-
Investigation:
ProFauna has a Division of
Investigation; conducting in-depth
investigations,
which involves
sometime dangerous intelligence
and data gathering on illegal wildlife
trapping activities, transportation,
smuggling and exportation of many
endangered species such as; parrots,
cockatoos, orangutans, bears, primates,
sea turtles. Areas of investigation
cover many parts of Sumatra, Seram,
Moluccas, Papua, Bali and Java including
Jakarta. We carry out illegal wildlife
market surveillance and monitoring in
Jakarta, Surabaya and many parts of
Indonesia on the species traded and
trapped.
-
Collaboration:
Working together with government
authorities, NGOs, local, international
agencies and the community to curb
illegal wildlife trade. We provide
technical knowledge to government
authorities on wildlife conservation,
rescue handling, animal welfare and
animal diseases.
-
Advocating wildlife legislation:
Our
problem is complex where we have to
change people’s minds
and perception about the practice of
keeping or consuming endangered wildlife
in the absence of awareness. We work to
present our cases to the government
authority based on scientific facts and
our technical knowledge. We urge for the
introduction of new legislations to
protect wildlife and their habitats. We
have had some success in parrot, turtle
and primate protection schemes.
-
Wildlife rescue operations:
We inform, guide and accompany
government authorities to investigate,
confiscate and rescue wild animals kept
illegally by traders and owners in
various locations in Indonesia. We carry
out wildlife rescue and confiscation
programs as
well as transporting and delivering
wildlife to the rescue centres.
Between 2001 and 2004, ProFauna has
rescued more than 1900 wild animals of
different species.
-
Wildlife shelter:
Petungsewu Wildlife rescue centre (PPS)
is funded by ProFauna, providing
excellent facilities including
quarantine area, veterinary care and a
rehabilitation program.
It
accommodates up to 200 rescued animals
of different species whilst
simultaneously ensuring a high standard
of animal welfare. Wild animals are
cared for, nursed back to health,
rehabilitated and prepared for their
release into protected habitats
(however, sadly, not all wildlife can be
released, some being permanently
disabled from injuries sustained from
trapping and confinement, some suffering
from incurable infectious diseases and
still other suffering from long term
psychological damage. ProFauna
is fund raising to build sanctuaries for
these animals).
-
Wildlife release operations:
ProFauna carries out wildlife release
programs and field surveys ensuring the
suitability and the survival of
the various
species released. We organise the
operation, veterinary treatment,
logistics, transportation, manpower and
supplies. So far ProFauna has released a
total of 1,310 wild animals. Most of
them are listed as endangered/protected
in Appendix 1 CITES.
-
Public
education and information:
We strongly believe in educating our
future leaders. We provide free regular
lectures, seminars and workshops at our
educational centre in Petungsewu (P-WEC)
camp aimed at different groups
of
society. Invitees include; teachers,
lecturers, government officials, the
police, the department of forestry,
judges, zoo authorities, businessmen,
university undergraduates and school
children. We also visit schools, universities,
private and government institutions and
villages to give free seminars and
lectures on wildlife and habitat
conservation, wildlife trade issues,
wildlife protection, animal diseases and
animal welfare.
We produce handouts, educational
booklets and teaching materials on
Indonesian fauna biodiversity. We also
produce a documentary film for use in
our video presentations and in-depth
reports on our findings.
ProFauna is committed to increase
conservation awareness from
an early age. School children are
regularly invited in groups to our
Putungsewu residential educational
centre, which facilitates up to 130
students per visit. We run eco-outdoor
fun activities and nature appreciation,
through play and learning
workshops. We advocate boycotts
on purchasing wild animals for
pets and promote animal welfare.
We invited a total of 2000 children/per
annum from various schools to our
educational centre. Active links to many
schools and universities are established
to promote the students’ understanding
and participation in wildlife
conservation. We
are working
to increase the number each year.
Our mobile unit travels widely to
various remote provinces or villages
around Indonesia actively, providing
public education and holding
exhibitions. This unit is also used as
our travelling “Freedom Fighter”
wildlife campaign.
-
Public campaigns:
ProFauna is against any form of
violence. Weakness in legislation and
law enforcement often results in little
or no regard for fauna conservation,
which adds to the need to highlight this
problem urgently. We conduct regular
organized public peace demonstrations
against exploitation and cruelty to
wildlife, highlighting its serious
threat to our biodiversity. Our
campaigns draw national and media
attentions and have often produced
positive results, when the government
authority have realised the urgency of
the situation and the need for immediate
action. Laws to ban turtle slaughter in
Bali, primate killing and parrots
exportation from North Maluku were
introduced
as the result of our campaigns. This
brings down the number of turtle
slaughter and parrot trapping by 80%
(however, we cannot be too complacent
even with these groundbreaking measures
as criminals can and have been finding
new loopholes and will take advantage of
the weak law enforcement that exists in
the rural areas that these animals
inhabit.)
We hold regular public exhibitions all
over Indonesia, spreading wildlife
conservation information and the
importance in saving endangered species
and their habitats. We highlight the
cruelty behind the wildlife trade and
dispel the myth that wildlife products
have any medicinal benefit.
We receive endorsement from many
Indonesian celebrities and pop groups.
Concerts are held annually to send
messages to their fans about the
importance of wildlife conservation.
-
Community building:
ProFauna pioneers and leads community
participation in various eco-outdoor
activities which promotes the
appreciation of nature and wildlife. We
organise bird watching/bird spotting
competitions, animal clubs and wildlife
camps. We issue a regular quality
wildlife magazine to ProFauna members
and government authorities, comics on
wildlife themes for young children.
We provide technical knowledge and guide
the villagers in Kuta, Bali to
incorporate turtle preservation into
tourism, which is their main source of
living. This program is well received
and has brought down the turtle
slaughtering by 80%.
Villagers who live around the P-WEC and
PPS in Malang,
receive free workshops and educational
seminars, promoting their understanding
of and support for fauna conservation
programs.
-
Award
and recognition:
ProFauna has created community Wildlife
Protection Awards. In 2003 four
Indonesian police chiefs in different
cities were given the award for their
services in curbing the wildlife trade.
In 2004 we awarded 5 persons for their
extraordinary efforts and contributions
in saving wildlife and wildlife
conservation.
