Who
we are:
We are
driven by the urgency to save threatened
and endangered wildlife in the Indonesian
archipelago, where many of the endangered
species we strive to protect are poached
and smuggled to illegal wildlife markets
both domestic and overseas. The problems
of cruelty to animals and the illegal
trade in wildlife are acute and must be
tackled together by the global community.
The current devastation rate will not
provide the opportunity for species
recovery.
Despite the difficult task ahead of us, we
are fuelled by the hope that our future
generations will be more aware of fauna
conservation and that the seeds we sow
will bear fruit in years to come. This is
why educating younger generations and the
community as a whole to raise their
awareness of wildlife conservation plays
such an important role in our programs.
ProFauna is a non political, non
religious, not-for-profit organisation
dedicated to fight the illegal wildlife
trade and to save wildlife from the
cruelty this trade brings with it. Our
approach in dealing with this difficult
problem is directly from grass roots level
upwards through direct public and
community involvement in the areas of:
-
Investigation
into illegal wildlife trade:
Monitoring and gathering of intelligence
and data on poaching, smuggling and
illegal trade
in
wildlife
-
Wildlife
rescue, care and release operation:
Carrying out rescue operations,
providing direct care and rehabilitation
for captured animals and their
subsequent release
back into the wild
-
Direct
public and community education program:
Providing effective scientific education
and training to raise awareness on
wildlife conservation, teaching animal
welfare and nature appreciation to
different groups particularly targeting
schools children, teachers, villagers,
businesses, government officials and law
makers.
-
Publicity campaigns
against the illegal wildlife trade and
animal cruelty:
Organising publicity campaigns to
highlight the urgency for better
legislation and law enforcement to
protect endangered
species. Providing information and
education to communities and
the
public. Advocating boycotts of the
purchase of endangered species for pets
or for consumption
We seek help from the global community to
save our world heritage for
the benefit of future generations, where
tigers, orang- utans, parrots, gibbons,
turtles, sun bears and other endangered
species will be able to live in
safety in
the wild rather than in zoos.
ProFauna provides direct care of wildlife
and public education
programs
at:
P-WEC (Petungsewu Wildlife Educational
Centre) located in Malang, East Java,
which has dormitories with sleeping
facilities for 130 youngsters, guest
houses for 8 and an open plan lecture
hall. The centre is located
in the foothills of Kawi Mountain offering
a
cool, fresh
climate in naturally beautiful
surroundings and providing excellent
outdoor fun activities for youngsters.
Petungsewu Wildlife Rescue Centre (locally
known as PPS) - a 2.3 hectares complex
located not far from our educational
centre. Our rescue centre has quarantine
areas, 24 hour veterinary care provided by
2 full time vets, 2 full time biologists,
a project manager and 9 supporting staff.
It shelters up to 200 rescued and
confiscated
animals of
many
different species with high standards of
welfare. Wildlife is cared for, given
medical treatment and introduced to a
rehabilitation program designed to enable
them to return to their protected natural
habitats.
ProFauna’s Principle:
All wildlife has value for conservation of
nature, and whenever possible, must be
left to live freely in their natural
habitats. We humans have the
responsibility to fulfil that. When there
is no demand, there will be no more
killing. |
